January 2021: A Time for Renewal

January 2021: A Time for Renewal

Happy New Year :).  We’ve made it around the sun again.  Isn’t it calming to think of ourselves as earthlings?…It simplifies it all a bit.  We are here to live… follow the sun, shelter from the cold, feed ourselves, wake up to do it all over again.  The world is so stead: keeping us on course and orbiting the sun.  We are the ones who make trouble for ourselves.  If we could only center ourselves on our axes as resolutely as the earth.

HUNGRY FOR 2021

It goes without saying that it’s time for 2021.  This past year, for as divisive as it was, it had us all swimming in the same direction…away from a calamitous virus.  What a time to be alive.  And once we see this through, perhaps we will feel that much more ALIVE and hungry for lives full of the pursuit of joy and full of embrace and human touch, and rich in all those experiences that we have been missing.

2020 was good enough for us here on the farm.  We were so touched by the unfailing support of our community.  We grew the farm despite having our hands fuller with a growing family…instituted online ordering, built a huge hoop house to extend our growing season, grew our sheep flock, baked a ridiculous amount of bread out of our tiny farmhouse.

We learned lessons about burn out, which redefined sustainable farming for us…encouraging me to face the music: my body gives me so much and though I feed it well, I am overworking it.  Just this year my body allowed me to give birth to a most beautiful baby, to feed him, to work so physically all the while in the field and kitchen, to think and emote constantly…to wake up early in the morning to get the day started and wake in the middle of the night to nurse.  I MUST give it what it needs…a more sustainable amount of work balanced with regular rest…body and mind.  And so we are taking January off to heal and prepare for another great, wild season.  We have so much to look forward to…and I’m hungry for it all.  We will spend the month fixing what is broken, giving back to our bodies, getting to that leak in the ceiling, putting some plans in place for the magic that will happen in the field and farmhouse kitchen this year.  And we will see you back at the market table renewed.  There is so much to look forward to…too much in fact to let ourselves hang back in the fog of 2020.

Potted herbs and spring/summer plant starts will be coming for you too.

Rich’s sourdough breads, granola, floral jelly, danish, and maybe some more baked goodness will be on the menu.

A few mystery goodies are in the works in addition to this list…whether they make it to the table in 2021 or not is to be determined.  So much to look forward to and it’ll be our longest growing season yet!
