Solstice! Hello

Solstice! Hello

The sun is masked behind a wall of clouds. I like this version of solstice. Though it will travel through our northern hemisphere's sky for more hours than yesterday, it will play coy. A shy summer sun.

The daylight hours will wane from here on. And we will be grateful that the sun dips low sooner as summer wears on and the heat mounts into July. For us people who play and plant and toil underneath the sun, we wear away until the sun goes down and the moon ushers us to sleep. By the end of sun up to sun down farming, our bodies are hungry for sleep. It comes for us as we try to tuck into a book, our saga of an Italian tv show we are watching, or conversation in the moonlight hours. And we give into the REM cycle, as our bodies feast on rest.

How incredible our bodies are, restored by slumber. To add to last night's replenishment, we've been infused with our weekly dose of intravenous farmers market inspiration. That tangible fulfillment of filling people's baskets with food grown by our hands, and a whole morning of communing with the lovely people who spend their time with us at market...maybe it's more precious than sleep.

We get to see the world as it could be...two strangers insisting that the other take the last sourdough loaf on our table, everyone's kids running together...never considering the others as strangers, people slowing down...walking slow, dog watching, people watching, not minding to wait in a line...maybe even swapping a recipe with the stranger who is wondering what the mongoloid purple vegetable in the basket is (it's a kohlrabi), people grateful for food, people bringing birthday pies or a couple of their grandmother's petunias which they remembered to dig up the night before to share with us.

Their grandmother is with us on the farm now, her petunias planted in the garden outside our window. They're all with us, you're all with us in spirit as we wake up to another day of this good life on the farm. We couldn't do it without you. This farm is way more than two people's dream of a life...it's manifested with the well wishes, farmers market visits, and love of many.

Happys solstice. Happy Fathers Day to you steadfast fathers. Sending you love :).
